The Centre for Translation and Textual Studies/School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, Dublin City University, is offering a four-year PhD scholarship in the domain of Translation in Crisis Scenarios, commencing in September 2015. The research will be supervised by Dr. Sharon O’Brien. The scholarship includes EU fees for four years and €16,000 per annum for living expenses.

Applicants will have at a minimum:

• at least a 2.1, or equivalent, in a relevant undergraduate or masters programme
• proven excellence in academic writing skills in English
• knowledge of at least one other language

Applicants should develop a research proposal around the topic of translation in crisis scenarios. This proposal could centre on one of the following topics, but is not limited to these, e.g.:

• Crisis communication policies and the role of translation and interpreting
• Training requirements (of translators/interpreters, first responders, NGOs and government agencies etc.)
• Literacy vs. illiteracy in crisis communication and implications for translation
• The role of translation technology in crisis scenarios
• The role of social media in translation for crisis scenarios

The proposal (to be submitted as PDF) should include:

• A concrete research question
• A brief literature review (500 words approx.) with a list of references
• A proposed methodology and justification for that methodology (500 words approx.)
