Congratulations to CTTS member, Dr. Mary Phelan, for the successful defence of her PhD thesis entitled: “Irish Language Court Interpreting 1801-1922”. In this thesis Mary presents a wealth of new information on how court interpreting for speakers of Irish was organised in 19th Century Ireland. The thesis draws on digitised newspaper archives, parliamentary debates, the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers database, hard-copy grand jury presentment books, and registered papers and country letter books from the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, to develop a systematic picture of court interpreting over the period in question. It covers such issues as the legal basis for the provision of interpreters for Irish, the recruitment and payment of interpreters, and the careers of individual interpreters, with Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field, capital and symbolic power used to frame the analysis. The thesis will be available for download from DCU’s digitial repository – doras.dcu.ie – from April 2013.
